The need is great and our neighbors are hurting. Here are New Trier Township Food Pantry facts WIN obtained from the Township:
* About 100 households, or just over 200 people, currently use the pantry. This number has DOUBLED since 2008.
* Consequently NTT has reduced use-per-family from 1x a week to 2x a month, and placed a 2-bag limit on
quantity.
* Contrary to myth, the homeless do not use the pantry. Users must have a township address and incomes less than 200% of the poverty level or $24,000 per year.
* People in every village in the township are using the pantry.
* Those who need the pantry often are struggling with one or more of the following: Displacement (job loss),
Disability and Disease, Divorce, Death, Desertion, Domestic Violence, and Drugs and Alcohol.
As the area's premier advocate for fair & affordable housing, the Housing Center can attest to the fact that area homeowners and tenants alike are cash-strapped and many are barely a paycheck away from foreclosure or eviction.
Please feel free to drop by non-perishable foods or paper goods to the Housing Center's office, 614 Lincoln Ave., between October 22 ("Make A Difference Day") through November 23 (the day before Thanksgiving).
