Vivid Art Gallery First Friday Art Opening
Vivid Art Gallery will host an opening for photographer Larry Simon and his newest exhibit, Still Life, on Friday, October 6th, from 5-8 PM.
In the past, Simon viewed still lifes in the traditional sense: portraits of people or inanimate objects frozen in time. However, his experiences as a photographer has broadened his viewpoint. Explains Simon, “While looking through the rangefinder of my camera, another expression of a Still Life emerged: one of human figures captured in a moment in time—their moment: to pause, to move, to contemplate, to look, to be. Catching a person in the ephemeral moment of doing nothing, or something, is in my imagination a Still Life, because, no matter how seemingly insignificant the moment, it is still the living of life. One of my all-time favorites is the perfectly-dressed Japanese train conductor perfectly checking her watch. She is frozen perfectly in a moment that rivals any Still Life I’ve seen, only she’s alive and breathing and in another instant will continue on with her life, while a bowl of apples will not.” The work in this exhibit focuses on these figures, captured in fleeting moments of being human.
Simon’s art photography is characterized by a blend of sharp and soft focus. Discussing this aspect of his work, Simon says, “This process originated during a month-long stay in Venice. I can still see myself standing on the Accademia Bridge, focusing on a gondola, and suddenly deciding to un-focus on it. What might happen? I liked the result, because the image of the gondola piloted by the gondolier becomes a dreamy, albeit blurry, tale that may just draw us in more deeply. We can’t quite make out what it is--or can we? The ambiguity appeals to me.” Simon also shoots through windows, fabric, and rain to create his distinctive blurred images. All of his work is produced in very limited editions. Larry’s work will be exhibited in the gallery throughout the month of October. Please stop by the gallery to see it.
In addition to the opening at Vivid, Hubbard Woods will be hosting its annual art walk, previously known as “Art Attack,” on October 6th from 5-8 PM. Participating stores will host an artist for the night, displaying their work in their windows and throughout the store. In addition, participants will feature, unique libations, live music and more! Don’t miss it!
