Vivid Art Gallery First Friday Art Opening
Vivid Art Gallery will be hosting an art opening for June Featured Artist David Keel on Friday, June 7th. The opening will run from 5-7 PM, is open to all and is free of charge. In addition to the opening at Vivid, the Hubbard Woods Design District will also be hosting its First Friday event, with a theme of Pops and Dots. In addition, live music will play throughout the district and participating businesses will feature libations and special promotions.
At the gallery, Keel will be presenting his latest work in his exhibit “A Walk in the Stars” during the month of June. Keel is a Chicago artist whose work consists of abstract landscapes. Many of his canvasses are quite large, with some work in his upcoming show measuring more than 6 feet by 6 feet. While he paints large, Keel also paints many smaller works, perfect for a variety of spaces.
Keel has been painting for more than 25 years, but continues to find new inspiration. In describing his work, Keel says, “I still feel as though I am exploring a world that offers so many options and things to learn. I started painting because of the mystique around it and I continue to do so, following abstract concepts like feelings, laughter and aesthetics.”
Keel paints largely using mixed media and a variety of materials to create his work. This results in a number of different textures and colors permeating his paintings, which leaves much to the imagination. With each new viewing, one can find new, hidden features in his work. Regarding this aspect of his work, he states, “People have described my paintings as dreamlike, haunting, colorful, nostalgic, and whimsical. Onlookers are constantly telling me they see things in my paintings I don’t see myself. It always amazes me that people can have wildly different interpretations of the same physical space. The painting process is mysterious in this way. Because of this, I am constantly trying to see the painting another way, from another perspective. I step away, I step back, I turn the painting on its side, I lay it on the table. When I do this successfully and get used to changing my mind and perspective, creativity flows easily and the painting process becomes natural.”
Please stop by the gallery for the opening or during the month of June to see this unique new work.
