Vivid Art Gallery First Friday Art Opening

Vivid Art Gallery is hosting an exhibit entitled Translucent Botanicals + Transparent Architecture for represented artist Julie Cowan during the month of April. The show will include Cowan’s most recent lithographic work with a focus, at the name implies, on floral and architectural subjects. On Friday, April 5th, the gallery will be hosting its monthly First Friday Art Opening for the exhibit from 5-7 PM. 
 
An Evanston artist, Cowan’s lithographs are created through a complex process beginning with digital photographs. Her latest work is a collection of lithographs layered with watercolor and colored pencil, exploring the intersection of color, transparency and light. Including imagery of greenhouses and conservatories, the layering of the work transforms rigid structures into abstracted geometries, inviting an interplay between visibility and concealment. She blurs the original architecture with imagined spaces, while the floral prints are illuminations of color and luminosity.
 
In describing her technique, Cowan states, “I select an image and then digitally alter the photos to create greater contrasts and stronger line. The photographs, as well as the printmaking technique, reveal imperfection. The delicate nature of the paper printing plates helps to create unique effects that reflect and capture the individual, when the paper tears, rips and wrinkles.  These effects of uncertainty integrate into the flora and architecture, creating unique monoprints.” Following the printing process, she then completes the work by hand coloring with pencil or watercolor.
 
Cowan will be present at the opening on April 5^th and will be giving an artist talk and demonstration of her work at 6:00 PM. She will also be on hand to answer questions regarding her work and to discuss her artistic process.
