SUMMARY:Vivid Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Vivid Art Gallery is hosting an exhibit for special exhibitor Amy Malcolm during the month of June. Entitled Moon Shadow\, it will present a variety of Malcolm's newest art\, which consists of painterly cartoon-like work inspired by her stints as a professional illustrator and at DC Comics. The gallery will also be hosting an opening for the exhibit on Friday June 5th\, from 5-7 PM\, in conjuncture with the Hubbard Woods Design District's First Friday event. \n\nThe art in this exhibit specifically focuses on the artist's reminiscing about her past. Malcolm says\, "I embrace the power we have to engage storytelling with our own preferences\, to manipulate recorded memory. I developed a method I call 'Moon Shadowing' to capture a feeling that convinces me through distorted visual documentation\, rather than a snapshot of reality." In order to achieve this\, she paints visual depictions of her memories\, changing elements to fit her interpretations of them. Certain motifs are repeated in her paintings\, including objects and colors that have a specific and special meaning to her. This inspiration developed from the experience of selling of her home after her children went away to college. Malcolm turned to painting for solace\, looking for a way to honor that empty space. Through creating art in this way\, she aims to demonstrate the power of enjoying the future by recreating what was important in the past. \n\nMalcom's paintings are characterized by bold cartoonish outlines filled in with strong\, bright colors. Working in oil and acrylic\, she flattens the planes of the figures and objects she paints. Perspective is purposely skewed\, and rules of anatomy are thrown out the window. The result is charming paintings that are simultaneously childlike and sophisticated\, muscular and feminine\, fanciful yet serious. \n\nPlease stop by the gallery for the opening or during the month of June to see this unique new work.
