Egan was born in Chicago and raised in San Francisco\, and is perhaps most well-known for her Pulitzer Prize winning book\, A Visit From the Goon Squad. She is celebrated for her novels as well as her short stories\, which have appeared in The New Yorker\, Harpers\, Granta\, and other publications. Also an award-winning journalist\, she has written frequently for the New York Times Magazine. She is a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship\, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Fiction\, and a Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Fellowship at the New York Public Library.\n\n\n\nThe Book\n\nManhattan Beach\, Egan's World War II-era novel set in atmospheric New York City\, has been called both moving and profound. The novel begins in 1934 Brooklyn as Eddie\, 11-year-old Anna Kerrigan's father\, struggles to support his wife and two daughters. By the time Anna is 19\, Eddie has vanished\, and America is in the Second World War. Working a dull job inspecting ship parts for the war effort\, Anna seizes the opportunity to become the first female civilian diver at the Brooklyn Naval Yard. Around the same time\, a chance encounter raises hopes that she can untangle the mysteries of her father's disappearance.\n\n\n\nTickets for the cocktail reception\, lecture and luncheon are available on Eventbrite or through the Library's website at winnetkalibrary.org. Tickets may also be purchased in person at the Winnetka or Northfield Library. For more information\, contact the Library at (847) 446-7220.\n\n\n\nThe One Book Two Villages events are sponsored by the Friends of the Winnetka-Northfield Library group. Books will be available for purchase and signing both events by The Book Stall.
