Alig is an Indiana artist whose work focuses on abstracted landscapes that blur the line between observed reality and imagined environments. She explores these themes through the use of pattern, color, and distorted perspective. Her approach to patterned abstraction draws on a personal lexicon of marks inspired by places she has lived and traveled. Subtle allusions to Indiana appear through motifs such as corn kernels and basketball hoops, while some motifs reference other cultures such as the arabesques and star patterns inspired by Turkish architecture, dots familiar from aboriginal painting and botanical elements inspired by her garden.
Alig’s work has often revolved around a central theme, but her newest work is more subtle in its thematic elements. In this exhibit, her aim is to find a balance between representational renderings of the landscape and purely imagined, even sometimes illogical, depictions. Discussing how these themes develop over time, Alig states, “One of the most satisfying things about being an artist is that you get to explore any topic that interests you at the moment and dive into it.”
Beyond her affinity for nature, another trademark of Alig’s work is the inclusion of geometric forms and patterns. Alig says, “I have an affinity for pattern, which probably stems from my extensive background with historic textiles. A new body of work may start with some new screens that I make in my studio. Layering patterns with screen printing gives a certain kind of energy to the surfaces, creates density and surprising color juxtapositions.” These layered patterns are not limited to her geometric forms, but permeate the entire work.
