Vivid Art Gallery First Friday Art Opening
Vivid Art Gallery will host an art opening for Featured Artist Anne Smith Stephan on October 7th at its monthly First Friday event. The opening, which runs from 5-8 PM, is open to all and is free of charge. In addition to great art, there will also be refreshments and live music will be playing throughout the district.
Smith Stephan will be presenting work in her exhibit entitled Beyond Earth and Sky. Smith Stephan’s work is defined by its subtle earth tones and intricate technique. Discussing her preferred medium of oil, Smith Stephan says, “Working with oil paints is such a fascinating medium because of the slow drying process. This allows me to continually go over layers with more paint and glazes and blend them or scrape them away to reveal the colors underneath, almost always using many different palette knives. I work on several paintings at once in order to continually work them - often starting with a complicated composition and then simplifying and abstracting even more.”
Smith Stephan works intuitively, without an end point in mind, in order to evoke possibilities within the work. Using a number of layers and working with palette knives to scrape and scratch the surface, Anne’s goal is to allow the viewer the opportunity to create their own interpretation of the work. In doing so, she feels the art becomes more personal for both the viewer and her as the artist.
This month, in conjunction with First Friday, the Hubbard Woods Design District will be hosting Art Attack, its annual art walk in which businesses will host a local artist’s work in their store. As always, participating businesses will serve a signature cocktail, and live music will be playing throughout the district. Stop by Vivid first to see the work of Smith Stephan, and to pick up an Art Attack map. Then browse the artwork available in the neighboring shops of Hubbard Woods.
