Vivid Art Gallery First - Actually Second - Friday Art Opening
Vivid Art Gallery will be hosting an art opening for September Featured Artist Amie Campbell on Friday, September 9th. The opening, which will occur on the second Friday of the month due to the Labor Day holiday, will run from 5-7 PM, is open to all and is free of charge.
Campbell will be presenting her latest work in her exhibit “Illuminate” during the month of September. Campbell is a Bloomington, IN artist whose abstract paintings are characterized by many layers of color and intricate, lively brushwork. According to Campbell, she uses color in a dialogue with the canvas, with a result that evokes the play of light on plants and objects. Says Campbell, “A lot of times I’ll just start with a bold smear of color and it’s like opening a book. You start something on the canvas and then you figure out what’s next. If you’re into the moment, it really just flows from there. The color tells you something, you tell it something back and then it’s like a conversation.” Her influences include the Post-Impressionist painters Pierre Bonnard and Paul Gauguin, as well as Claude Monet’s water lily paintings.
Featuring her trademark brilliant colors, Campbell’s work reflects the beauty and splendor she sees in the rolling hills surrounding her studio in southern Indiana. Her colors, all of them mixed according to her own special “recipes,” are seasonal and change based on the light and weather. She also makes great use of glazes, which add transparency to her colors in an effect that mimics light. According to Campbell, it is the glazes that make her paintings come alive. She often works in diptychs and triptychs, both to evoke the idea of painted screens, and also because she likes to work large – too large to transport her canvases by car. Breaking down the canvases into multiple pieces solves the problem!
Please stop by the gallery during the month of September to see this unique new work.
